Western Link 2 is a proposed 525kV, 2GW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) multi-terminal transmission link that will strengthen electricity connections between Scotland and Wales. The link will increase the capacity and resilience of the UK's electricity transmission network as part of The Great Grid Upgrade. This wider programme of grid reinforcement projects will support the UK's energy transition, enabling the growth of renewable energy generation, strengthening energy security and increasing network resilience.

Our role
National Grid and Scottish Power Energy Networks have appointed AtkinsRéalis to support the strategic optioneering and deliver Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) services for the Western Link 2 project. Our scope includes:
- Cable landing points and cable corridors
- DC converter stations and DC switching stations
- AC substations
- All associated temporary and permanent infrastructure.
Through the FEED phases, AtkinsRéalis has assessed siting and routing options and continues to develop the engineering definition required to support stakeholder engagement, project consenting and progression towards construction readiness.

The challenge
Major transmission infrastructure projects are shaped long before construction begins. For Western Link 2, the challenge is to transform a strategic route corridor into a deliverable and consentable project while balancing engineering, environmental, social and land-use constraints.
The project requires decisions on infrastructure siting, cable routing, land acquisition and stakeholder engagement, all while managing risks associated with floodplains, historic mining, utility crossings, sensitive environmental areas, visual impacts and future construction access.
The project also involves engagement with a range of stakeholders, including asset owners, local authorities, landowners and local communities.

Our solution
AtkinsRéalis brought together specialists from across engineering, electrical, environmental, geotechnical and land disciplines to develop a fully integrated FEED solution. Using spatial constraint mapping, route optioneering and targeted ground investigations, the team assessed engineering, environmental, stakeholder and constructability considerations simultaneously to identify the most suitable alignment.
The team also drew on lessons learned from comparable HVDC projects in the UK and internationally to inform solution development and future delivery planning.
Working collaboratively with National Grid, Scottish Power Energy Networks and the wider consultant team, AtkinsRéalis has helped ensure engineering decisions remain aligned with project objectives, consenting requirements and future delivery needs.

Outcomes and Impact
The outputs of the FEED study are providing National Grid and Scottish Power Energy Networks with a coordinated engineering solution that has helped improve understanding of project constraints and risks while providing the technical evidence required to inform key decisions.
Western Link 2 demonstrates the value of early multidisciplinary collaboration in developing major transmission infrastructure. The work completed by AtkinsRéalis so far has helped lay the foundations for a significant reinforcement of the UK's electricity transmission network, supporting greater renewable energy integration, strengthened network resilience and improved energy security.
