Across the U.S., interstate corridors are more than highways—they’re the backbone of a multimodal transportation system. From ports and railways to air cargo hubs and last-mile delivery networks, every transportation mode touches our corridors. If we want a connected transportation system that is safer, faster, and more resilient, we must modernize the corridors that hold it all together.
Corridors Connect the Multimodal Network
Our transportation system is inherently multimodal. Trucks manage long-haul and last-mile deliveries. Rail moves heavy freight efficiently. Planes deliver time-sensitive cargo. Ports connect us to global markets. Progressing technologies like advanced air mobility continue to demonstrate how they will integrate into this network.
But too often, these modes operate in silos. Interstate corridors are where they all converge and where the priority on modernization should be. When we treat these corridors as multimodal platforms, we enable stronger performance across the entire transportation network.
Why Corridors Matter More Than Ever
Highways like I-80 and I-35 aren’t just ribbons of pavement. They’re economic engines enabling commerce. They are also connectors: linking freight hubs to ports, rail and distribution centers, and rural towns to urban markets.
Today, progress means leveraging technology, enabling seamless modal transitions, and designing with digital and physical coordination in mind.
It also means we need more than just funding—we need collaboration. When public agencies, private companies, and local leaders work together, we can deliver real improvements that people experience every day.
How AtkinsRéalis Is Enabling Corridor-Based Multimodal Growth
We’re advancing key interstate corridors through a holistic transportation approach led by data-driven planning, design innovation, and strong public-private partnerships that prioritize multimodal thinking.
Central Texas: Collaborating for Regional Efficiency
In a rapidly growing region with more than $23 billion in infrastructure projects underway, overlapping construction schedules created congestion and confusion. Our response? The Central Texas Construction Partnership Program (CPP)—a shared data platform and suite of mobility tools like CTXGo that allow agencies to plan collaboratively and inform the public in real time about projects and their impacts.
This solution was the first unified registered and published construction feed for the Austin region, connecting directly into the FHWA’s Work Zone Data Exchange. This gives apps like Google Maps and Waze live updates, minimizing disruptions not just for commuters, but also for freight vehicles that rely on dependable timing between intermodal transfer points.
Modern Freight Logistics and Truck Parking Solutions
As advocates for Jason’s Law—a federal initiative enacted in 2012 to address the critical shortage of safe, accessible parking for truck drivers—we understand the real-world challenges drivers face when trying to find legal, secure places to rest.
We’re helping address this issue by implementing real-time truck parking systems that use predictive analytics to guide drivers to available spaces. We’ve deployed these solutions in Florida and Nevada, and we’re supporting North Carolina in early-stage investigative efforts.
We believe the path forward lies in strong public-private collaboration—bringing together transportation agencies, technology providers, and industry leaders to expand parking availability and improve safety.
Data-Driven Multimodal Mindset
Through our Traffic Management Center (TMC) contracts, we help transportation agencies respond faster and smarter by leveraging AI and advanced analytics to proactively manage traffic flow and incidents so we can help everything move more smoothly, from freight to families.
Our Advanced Analytics Control Centre (AACC) empowers our partners with predictive analytics, automated workflows, and real-time insights to support faster, smarter project decisions and outcomes. In some cases, it’s also helped our clients cut considerable project costs.
A Connected Future Starts with Corridors
Leveraging our interstate corridors isn’t just about technology; it’s about making life better for the people who use and rely on them every day. It’s also about creating a truly connected transportation ecosystem. Corridors are not just highways—they’re the backbone of a multimodal network that includes road, rail, air, and maritime systems. When these modes work together seamlessly, we unlock new levels of efficiency, resilience, and opportunity for economic development.
We are proud to be part of this transformation—bringing the tools, experience, and partnerships needed to help America’s interstate corridors evolve into data-driven, more integrated platforms for mobility, commerce, and community growth.
