Last year, we launched a new advisory service aimed at helping clients develop clear Social Value programs on built environment projects and, crucially, ensuring delivery of those commitments. In order to roll out the service, we have invested in the expansion of our Social Value team, establishing regional teams in each of the key areas of the UK, who liaise with clients to support their social value commitments.
The Social Value team in our London and South East region has recently welcomed two new additions, Robyn Thomas and Jesse Aberbach, who have already started delivering impactful sessions. Within the short space of a week, our team aided in the delivery of three events across diverse clients’ communities.
In Westminster, the team supported the event hosted by The Pimlico Million, a resident-led funding and community development organization, funded by the Big Local. The organization has been given £1 million to spend over ten years to provide community-led projects, support and development in Westminster.
The Pimilico Million release a residents’ survey which based on the responses, decides how The Pimlico Million finances are spent in the next two years. Our team therefore supported the residents event to drive engagement and ensure extensive feedback was obtained. The team supported The Pimlico Million with various activities on the day including, organizing the space, greeting and assisting residents with filling in the digital services questionnaires. Robyn Thomas, Social Value Coordinator, created and shared QR codes accessible by smartphones to allow residents easy access and then led an online demonstration to all residents on how to complete the online survey successfully and thoroughly.
Our Social Value coordinators, Robyn and Jesse, along with Social Value Lead Ilaria Agueci, provided instrumental support to make the survey more accessible and breaking down the process to residents maximized engagement and allowed our team and The Pimlico Million to gather optimal feedback from participants.
Nawal Lakhdar, Community Engagement Leader, The Pimlico Million said:
“Let me take this opportunity to say how much we, The Pimlico Million staff, chair and vice chair have appreciated all the three of your support. I personally admire your enthusiasm and the positive energy the three of you brought to our community event.”
In Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F), Jesse and Robyn, worked closely with the Construction Youth Trust, to raise awareness amongst young people about the myriad of roles within the construction industry. They facilitated two sessions: sustainable design and the carbon challenge.
This Sustainable Design workshop enabled students at Fulham Cross Academy in H&F to consider the contribution of the current construction industry to greenhouse gas emissions and how the industry is working to reduce this impact. The Carbon Challenge was a thought-provoking exercise, designed to encourage young people to think about meaningful changes in their school environment that they could implement to reduce the school’s CO2 emissions.
For Southwark Council, the team partnered again with Construction Youth Trust, to tackle issues that are stopping pupils engaging in STEM learning. The team organized an event hosted at our London office, welcoming local pupils from a school in Southwark. Our BIM team led a STEM workshop, guiding pupils through the software used for building design and management. Under the BIM teams’ guidance, the students were shown how to use REVIT software to manage buildings and create 3D designs. As an indication of success, the group have been asked to return to lead similar sessions.
