Who are the Behaviour and Culture Facilitators?

Founded by Behaviour and Culture Director Caroline Brown, who has spent the past decade transforming workplace culture through positive psychology, appreciative inquiry, and a strengths-based approach, the AtkinsRéalis Nuclear team is redefining what it means to lead with culture.

At the centre of this transformation is a growing team of Behaviour and Culture Facilitators (BCFs), championing a people-first approach rooted in curiosity, care, courage, and community—positioning AtkinsRéalis as a leader in behavioural excellence across the nuclear industry.

The BCF team is a diverse team of professionals from across the Nuclear EMEA business, including engineers, project managers, consultants, and directors. What unites them is a shared passion for culture and behaviour, and a vision “for our business to be at the forefront of leading our behaviours and culture in ways that others aspire towards; so that our people and our industries thrive.”

BCFs are not just culture advocates—they are trained practitioners and facilitators who lead by example.

Their role encompasses three core elements:

1. Cultural Leadership - Modelling the values and behaviours that define the organisation's culture.

2. Strengths-based coaching - Accredited practitioners in Strengths Profile, helping individuals identify and leverage their unique strengths.

3. Facilitation - Delivering workshops and sessions that support team development, onboarding, and cultural evolution.

I'm grateful to work alongside so many people who truly care about continuously strengthening our culture. It's more than just a concept - there's a shared sense of responsibility and dedication to creating an environment where everyone can thrive.

Samantha Hutchinson

Engineer

Central to the BCF methodology is the strengths-based approach, which draws on positive psychology to focus on what individuals do well and enjoy. Rather than focusing on weaknesses, this approach encourages people to harness their natural energy and talents to achieve sustainable high performance. Caroline worked extensively alongside Chartered Occupational Psychologist, Emily Hutchinson, in applying this approach, and together they published the book ‘The Strengths-Based Organization – How to boost inclusivity, wellbeing and performance’.

In Nuclear EMEA we use Strengths Profile, a self-assessment tool developed by Cappfinity. After completing the profile, individuals engage in a one-to-one debrief with a BCF. These confidential coaching-style sessions help participants gain deeper insight into their strengths and how to harness them in their current context for increased energy.

The impact is tangible. As of December 2024, 100% of participants sharing feedback reported feeling able to be open and honest with their strengths coach, 95% gained insight about their strengths, and 91% better understood how to apply their strengths at work. Feedback highlights increased confidence, motivation, and improved collaboration - key ingredients for a thriving workplace.

Workshops that inspire and transform

BCFs facilitate a range of workshops designed to embed the strengths approach into team dynamics and organisational culture. These include:

  • Strengths–purpose workshops: These sessions help teams understand each other’s strengths, align with shared goals, and foster psychological safety. The result is improved collaboration, engagement, and productivity.
  • Appreciative inquiry workshops: Using a positive psychology framework, these workshops guide teams through a process of discovering what works well, dreaming of future possibilities, designing solutions, and delivering change. This approach shifts the focus from problems to potential.
  • Bespoke workshops: Tailored to specific team needs, these sessions cover topics such as psychological safety, transactional analysis, and active listening. They are designed to build trust, unlock thinking, and promote inclusive, high-performing environments.

Culture in Action: Real-World Impact

The BCF approach is not just theoretical—it’s making a real difference across the business. From culture onboarding of new starters to supporting leadership development and mentoring initiatives, BCFs are embedded in key moments of the employee journey.

Case studies from 2024 and 2025 illustrate the breadth of their impact. In the Women in Nuclear UK Mentoring Programme, BCF-led breakout sessions on psychological safety and strengths helped early-career professionals build confidence and connection. At HackaFuture, a digital careers event, BCFs introduced the strengths approach to a new generation of talent, reinforcing the company’s commitment to innovation and inclusion.

Perhaps most powerfully, the Leading Our Culture programme—now evolved into Evolving Our Culture—has brought together hundreds of employees to explore how they can shape and lead culture. These immersive experiences have sparked new ways of thinking, strengthened relationships, and align teams with the company’s strategy.

As the team expands right across our EMEA regions, and as external demand for their expertise continues to grow, the Behaviour and Culture Facilitators are proving that when people feel seen, heard and supported, extraordinary things happen.
