Background
Type One Energy, a private US-based startup, are developing stellarator-based fusion technology through its FusionDirect program. The aim is to develop a commercially viable, scalable fusion-based power plant.
AtkinsRéalis Involvement
In May 2024, Type One Energy selected AtkinsRéalis to leverage their multidisciplinary expertise, particularly in Balance of Plant (BoP) for fusion contexts. AtkinsRéalis was tasked with developing the requirements and design for the Fusion Pilot Plant, Infinity Two, with a focus on BoP.
Leveraging Expertise in a New Field
Working on a project in the early stages of its conceptual development provided a unique set of challenges to the project team, which meant that they had to be flexible and reactive to change.
This allowed the project team to demonstrate their expertise in many areas, guiding the client through their development process, and highlighting potential risks and areas where it felt there should be an increased focus on development.
Project Outcome
In December 2024, the team handed over the Pre-Conceptual Design Summary Report for the BoP, along with supporting documentation and models. This provided Type One Energy with a strong platform to advance in key areas such as requirements modelling, plant layout, power generation, and electrical engineering workstreams.

The successful completion of this phase positions AtkinsRéalis to continue its partnership with Type One Energy. As the Infinity Two design progresses towards the Conceptual Design phase, Type One Energy will continue to call on AtkinsRéalis' Subject Matter Experts as they advance their stellarator design.
