Background
The safe management of radioactive waste is a central challenge in nuclear decommissioning. Legacy materials must be retrieved, assessed and routed to the correct disposal pathway, often under hazardous conditions and with strict regulatory requirements.
Traditional sorting approaches rely heavily on manual processes. These expose workers to risk, limit operational efficiency, and introduce variability in how waste is classified. As programmes accelerate, there is a clear need for more consistent, scalable and data-driven solutions.

Challenge
Nuclear waste sorting is complex, labour-intensive and safety critical.
Material streams are highly varied and must be accurately classified to ensure they are sent to the correct waste route. Incorrect classification can significantly increase disposal costs and long-term liabilities.
At the same time, operations take place in environments where exposure risk must be minimised, limiting reliance on manual intervention. For sites such as Oldbury, where large volumes of fuel element debris are stored, this combination of scale, complexity and risk makes traditional approaches difficult to sustain.

Solution
Auto-SAS, the Autonomous Sorting and Segregation System, has been developed by AtkinsRéalis and Createc through the ARCTEC joint venture to automate the handling of radioactive waste.
The system integrates robotics, sensing and control software to identify, classify and sort waste items without direct human intervention.
Robotic manipulators carry out handling tasks, while sensor systems assess each item and determine its characteristics. Software coordinates these processes, ensuring consistent decision-making and creating a traceable record of outcomes.
This creates a controlled, repeatable process that can operate continuously in environments where manual methods are constrained.
