Hana Pharm’s new, state-of-the-art pharmaceuticals plant in South Korea is designed to meet the growing demand for injectable medicines while setting a new benchmark for automation, sustainability, and scalability. AtkinsRéalis were engaged in June 2024 to bring this vision to life and deliver a fully integrated design solution that meets global GMP standards, tackles the unique challenges of pharmaceutical production, and supports future growth.
A Holistic, High-Performance Design Approach
The AtkinsRéalis team was engaged to deliver both basic and detailed design services across all disciplines—civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, and fire protection. All services were provided in-house, ensuring seamless coordination and adherence to global best practices.
The facility was meticulously designed to meet stringent international standards, including EU-GMP and cGMP, ensuring the highest levels of product quality and consumer safety. In a move that underscores the collaborative nature of the project, Hana Pharm also requested a review of the process design—an element outside the original scope. This additional layer of quality assurance allowed for even tighter integration between systems and processes.
Sustainability was embedded from the outset, with a focus on energy-saving materials and recyclable resources. For example, a Hot Gas Waste Heat Recovery System was selected to capture and reuse heat generated during production. This innovation is expected to significantly reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, supporting environmentally responsible operation.

Building a Smart, Automated Future
The new facility sets a benchmark for pharmaceutical manufacturing in South Korea, with automation at its core. By integrating production equipment automation with an advanced Environmental Management System (EMS), the facility is engineered to adapt to dynamic operational conditions and exceptional scenarios.
A standout feature is the automated warehouse, designed as the central hub of a smart logistics ecosystem. It connects seamlessly with all production buildings and is future-proofed for expansion through an automatic transport system. This enables highly efficient logistics operations with minimal human intervention, driving productivity, reducing costs, and stabilizing quality.
Phase 1 of the project focused on completing the automated warehouse and key production buildings. A scalable platform structure was adopted to support future integration with additional buildings, laying the foundation for a next-generation logistics network. This forward-thinking design anticipates the integration of AI-driven logistics optimization, real-time transport automation, and smart factory operations.
To support collaboration and maintain a single source of truth, the entire project was managed in the cloud. This digital-first approach enabled real-time communication and streamlined decision-making across teams and geographies.

Flexibility was a key design principle. The facility spans 18,847.20㎡ across one basement and three above-ground floors, with the structural capacity to expand by an additional four floors. It is also designed to connect to an adjacent vacant site, allowing for future construction as market demands evolve.
