Supporting faster diagnoses and improved patient care across Dorset
University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust commissioned a new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) Endoscopy Unit and associated Decontamination facilities to increase diagnostic capacity, improve patient experience and strengthen healthcare resilience across the region. The project forms part of the national programme to improve access to diagnostic services, reduce waiting times and support earlier intervention for patients.
Working alongside the Trust and project partners, AtkinsRéalis provided programme and project management consultancy services to coordinate the delivery of a technically complex healthcare facility within a live hospital environment. The new unit is fully JAG-compliant and includes six endoscopy rooms, a dedicated training centre, an advanced five-washer decontamination facility and critical infrastructure upgrades, including a new transformer and standby generator.
Meeting growing demand for diagnostic services
Developed to significantly increase endoscopy capacity across Dorset, the new CDC facility provides modern, resilient infrastructure capable of supporting future healthcare needs. By expanding access to diagnostic services and enabling faster diagnosis, the unit supports wider NHS ambitions to improve patient pathways, enhance outcomes and reduce pressure on acute healthcare services.
Delivering in a live healthcare environment
AtkinsRéalis acted as the Trust's representative throughout design, procurement and construction, providing programme leadership, governance, risk management, stakeholder coordination and NEC4 project management. Working within an operational hospital presented significant challenges, including constrained site conditions, extensive utility diversions, complex stakeholder requirements and the need to maintain uninterrupted clinical services throughout construction.
A collaborative delivery approach brought together clinical teams, estates personnel, designers, contractors and specialist suppliers through structured governance and proactive risk management. Regular stakeholder engagement and careful programme monitoring helped identify potential issues early, support informed decision-making and minimise disruption to hospital operations.

Designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, the new building will help future-proof diagnostic services while improving environments for patients and healthcare professionals.
The completed facility is expected to double endoscopy capacity, provide dedicated training facilities and strengthen the Trust's ability to deliver high-quality diagnostic services for years to come.
