Supporting the UK’s Future Combat Air System (FCAS), including its next-generation stealth fighter
AtkinsRéalis is providing a range of engineering, digital and assurance expertise to help shape the UK’s future combat air capability
Through the Aurora Engineering Partnership, we are supporting the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) and wider defence enterprise to establish coherent, secure and digitally enabled ways of working across this complex programme.
At the heart of the UK FCAS is the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), an international partnership between the UK, Italy and Japan, which will deliver a sixth-generation combat aircraft for all three nations. The GCAP aircraft - an adaptable crewed combat platform known in the UK as Tempest - will work in concert with Typhoons, F-35s and autonomous systems as part of a next-generation RAF to address evolving threats.
With an unprecedented degree of digital technology in its development, manufacture and operation, the GCAP aircraft will operate as part of the wider FCAS ‘system-of-systems’ - integrating with uncrewed aircraft, collaborating with autonomous platforms, and acting as a central information node.

The challenge
Delivering FCAS presents a significant ambition for MOD and its supply chain. The programme must integrate cutting edge technologies — including advanced stealth, artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems — to enable an air system capable of operating across crewed and uncrewed platforms, while supporting secure collaboration across multiple nations and industrial partners. This shift towards a more distributed and networked air system places greater emphasis on integration across platforms and partners.
At the same time, the defence enterprise must adopt new digital ways of working to manage complexity, assure safety and security, and maintain pace across a capability that will evolve over several decades to deter adversaries.

Our role
Since 2022, AtkinsRéalis - through the Aurora Engineering Partnership - has been providing essential engineering support to FCAS that will contribute to GCAP, including:
- systems engineering modelling and enterprise architecture
- digital enterprise planning and requirements setting
- digital engineering strategy advice and delivery planning
- information, knowledge and data management
- safety and environmental engineering
- security risk advice and cyber security review
We have led MOD’s technical engagement with UK industry on the development of a digital engineering strategy. This is designed to accelerate development cycles and support efficient acceptance, certification and qualification through life.
Our work is helping embed more joined up, digitally enabled ways of working across the programme, such as developing connected sources of truth for engineering data, agentic-AI and digital twins.
Alongside this, our teams are supporting the development of the programme’s safety and assurance framework, including the overarching Safety Management System and airworthiness assessments. By identifying and managing risk early, we are helping MOD maintain confidence as FCAS progresses through its development lifecycle.
We are also supporting the programme’s security risk management approach, helping ensure that digital ways of working are underpinned by appropriate governance and a secure by design approach.

The impact
Our work is helping reduce uncertainty and risk across the delivery of FCAS, supporting MOD as it develops a more adaptable air capability across crewed and uncrewed platforms and transitions from concept to long term delivery.
FCAS will bolster UK national security and make a significant contribution to the defence industrial base, promoting research and development and skills investment across regions. From 2025 to 2035, FCAS is estimated to contribute £16b to the UK economy and support more than 16,000 jobs annually¹.
FCAS will be transformative for defence and underpin the future of UK combat air. Through integration with wider defence systems and advanced technologies including AI and autonomy, FCAS will enable the UK to stay ahead of adversaries for decades to come.
