Scout Engineering & Consulting Ltd. to join national coalition supporting Canadian nuclear technology
MONTREAL: November 3, 2026 – AtkinsRéalis, a world-class engineering services and nuclear company with offices around the world, today welcomed Scout Engineering & Consulting Ltd. (Scout) as the newest Ambassador to the Canadians for CANDU campaign, following the announcement of Scout’s participation at yesterday’s Indigenous Leadership in Canada’s Nuclear Future event.
Scout’s addition to Canadians for CANDU reflects the growing role Indigenous-owned businesses can play in Canada’s nuclear future. As governments and utilities consider the next generation of nuclear projects, there is a significant opportunity to ensure Indigenous communities and businesses participate not only through consultation, but through ownership, employment, procurement, engineering, project delivery and long-term economic partnerships.
“Scout Engineering brings an important Western Canadian and Indigenous-owned perspective to Canadians for CANDU,” said Joe St. Julian, President, Nuclear, AtkinsRéalis. “Canada’s next generation of nuclear investment represents an opportunity to create durable economic benefits for Indigenous communities while strengthening our domestic engineering and industrial capacity. Scout’s leadership demonstrates how Indigenous businesses can play a direct role in delivering major infrastructure projects and helping shape Canada’s energy future. We are pleased to welcome Steven and the Scout team to the movement.”
Launched in 2024, the Canadians for CANDU campaign represents a growing coalition that includes organized labour, members of Canada’s nuclear supply chain, Indigenous organizations, academic institutions, healthcare organizations and other Canadian businesses.
Scout joins a growing group of Indigenous-owned and Indigenous-led organizations supporting Canadians for CANDU, reinforcing the campaign’s commitment to meaningful Indigenous participation in Canada’s nuclear sector. Previous Indigenous Ambassadors have included organizations such as First Nations Power Authority, Makwa-Dewar, OG7GES Indigenous Group Inc. and Voyageur Services.
Led by Co-Chairs The Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, The Honourable Mike Harris, and The Honourable Dustin Duncan the movement brings together leaders from across Canada who share a belief that Canada’s energy future should be built on Canadian technology, Canadian expertise and Canadian resources.
Scout Engineering & Consulting Ltd.
Scout is an Indigenous-owned and led engineering firm founded by Steven Vaivada, a proud member of the Kainai Nation, part of the Blackfoot Nation. The company works with Indigenous communities and other clients to deliver engineering and infrastructure solutions designed to create stronger communities, build local capacity and support meaningful economic participation.
“As a 100 per cent Indigenous-owned engineering and consulting firm, Scout exists to build stronger infrastructure, greater capacity and real economic participation for Indigenous communities. Joining Canadians for CANDU is a natural fit,” said Owner and President Steven Vaivada. “Nuclear development can create long-term careers, grow Indigenous businesses and build lasting partnerships around major projects. With our team working across Alberta and Saskatchewan, we see how nuclear can support energy security, industrial growth and community development in both provinces. We're proud to help make sure the next chapter of Canadian nuclear includes Indigenous leadership, ownership and shared prosperity.”
The CANDU moment
Canada has world-leading expertise in the design, construction, operation, maintenance, refurbishment, and overall program management of nuclear reactors, supported by a highly qualified domestic supply chain.
CANDU® technology is one of Canada’s most important innovations and remains the country’s only domestically developed and licensed large-scale nuclear reactor technology. CANDU reactors can use natural uranium, provide reliable, emissions-free baseload electricity, and support the production of medical isotopes used in healthcare systems around the world. More than 250 Canadian companies contribute to the CANDU supply chain, creating economic benefits that reach communities across the country.
Each new CANDU project generates thousands of high-quality jobs and billions of dollars in economic activity, helping to sustain Canadian expertise in one of the world’s most advanced industries. From uranium mining and fuel fabrication to engineering, construction and long-term operations, CANDU creates opportunities throughout the entire nuclear value chain.
By investing in Canadian technology, Canada invests in Canadian workers, businesses and communities – strengthening domestic industrial capacity while building the infrastructure needed to power future economic growth.
The Canadians for CANDU campaign calls on federal and provincial governments to support the deployment of made-in-Canada CANDU technology as part of the country’s long-term energy and economic strategy.
The choice is clear. It’s time to choose CANDU.
